Writing: A Letter To My Second Protagonist

So, in a bid to make me blog that little bit more, here is a letter I wrote for Aran (around the same times I wrote one for Lauryn)

If this fantasy quadrilogy I’m planning goes the way I think it is, I’ll have five protagonists all in all, and I can already imagine the apology letters I’m gonna have to send to them at one point or another.

So, let us begin.

Dear Aran Rill

I’ll be honest and say I don’t know how you happened. You just did. There was a part of you that already existed in my mind, but you weren’t this whole person that you are now. Despite that, you didn’t let go, and you became an anchor in the world of monsters, ghosts, serpents and Gods. You became so much more than the boy I was going to bring in way later.

You were never meant to exist until the third book.

Your companions were never thought of before you.

Ryan and Bryn were never meant to be part of the deal, but somehow, they weaved themselves in, just like you did.

But, beleive it or not, you are the one I believe in the most, you are the one I think can do this. You have no idea who you are, the pieces are there, you just have to put it together. You are much more than just an orphan from the King’s city Aran.

I know I took a lot from you already, I took away things I never thought had to go, and I’m truly sorry for that. I really am. I literally cried over what I did to you, even if in the grand scheme of things, it’s a minute detail – it had to happen – you don’t realise that yet, but you will.

To make up for what I did, I’m gonna give you more, for a time, and then I’m going to take it away again. You just have to stay yourself throughout it all, because I think you can get through anything you put your mind too. Your friends, the ones I hadn’t planned will always be the strongest, the ones that will make you laugh when you want to cry and live when you want to die.

Everything happens for a reason Aran, you happened for a reason. Your the one who made the first manuscript way over the word count I wanted it to be. You were – are – worth it though. Thank you for coming in to this story when you did. Thank you for being you, thank you for everything, and don’t ever change.

Even when they want you to.

How Did ‘No Goal May’ Go?

So, I had a little bit of a break from blogging last month which, wasn’t completely planned but, I think, really helped me get things back in to prospective!

I lost my internet them first few days of May – which was not as liberating as some of you may think that it should be… It was just horrible!

But, it did give me time to game (which I forgot how much I love doing) and, it pushed me to go out and finally buy the MCU movies and binge watch them to my hearts content!

The rest of the month? I gamed some more, worked a lot and wrote loads! I’m still in the haze of fanfiction writing at the moment, but this month, I’m gonna dive back in to Tales of Monsters and get it ready for my very wonderful and patient beta-readers who are on the sidelines!

Also last month, I decided to end my subscription with the BookBoxClub! Its been a brilliant experience this last year, and if it wasn’t for them, I never would have found the Spellslinger series (aka. My favourite book series ever).

And, it’s also opened up the oppurtunity (mostly financial) to delve in to a different subscription box!

Anyways! I thought I’d just throw this little update out there just to say that normal posting shall resume shortly!

I think I’m gonna stick to my usual Wednesday posts – which will mostly cover all my writing wins and woes, and then, once I get back in to the swing of posting weekly, I’ll add a few more posting days here and there! Although, if inspiration does hit, expect a random post every now and then!

It’s good to be back!

And, until next time guys,

Just Keep Writing,

I Lost My Internet (And I almost didn’t survive)

Well, the title’s a tad dramatic, but still…

I thought I’d be fine. I thought it was what I wanted.

It’s not. Not like that.

I wish I could say that it was invigorating, and, don’t get me wrong, aspects of it was. If anything, the best thing to come from it was a library card! And, perhaps a sudden urge to buy all the Marvel Cinematic Universe films on DVD and have a Marvelathon… Now, all of that was fun as hell! And, I re-found my love for Iron Man (which both my brother and best-friend tried to take away from me…) and of course, Thor…

And, yeah, I spent time playing games – and finally finishing Bioshock Infinite, and I spent some more time writing up some fanfiction, which, in turn, has given me so many more ideas for my own novels, it’s kinda crazy, but yeah.

But, I think it was the sudden loss of internet that hit me. The fact that I couldn’t go back to it if I wanted, and, that it happened just after – literally the day after guys – I decided to spoil myself and get XBOX Gold after, like, two years of not having it…

And, although, I missed being able to go on Instagram – mostly just to see what other people are up to with their writing and lives, (I’m already fazing out of Facebook so that really never bothered me), I missed being able to ask google all those stupid questions I need to know.

You know the ones… The ones that make your internet history look a little dodgy…

And, now I have it back. Other than realising how much I missed being able to listen to songs on YouTube in the background whilst I write in bed, I haven’t even used it all that much… Not really…

I’ve kept up with my Marvelathon. I have, like, five movies left to watch and I’ll be all ready to get Black Panther when it comes out on DVD in June, and, I’ve googled my weird questions, but, I haven’t used it like I did before.

And maybe that’s a good thing… And maybe it’s also a bad thing because I’ve had the internet back since last week and this is my second blog post of the month…

And, somehow, despite the fact that I have perfectly good internet in my house, I’m sat in the library writing this.

Well. Yes. Logic, right?

Anyway, I’m gonna attempt to catch up on all your guys posts, and write up a few that I’ve been needing too!

Until then though guys,

Just Keep Writing,

‘No-Goals’ May!

Guys, its one heck of a rainy day in May, and, to add to it, this last month has been a bit of a world wind.

Work and more work has thrown me off completely, and my first camp nanowrimo experience just fell flat on its face…

I rewrote about 4k words of The Diary of a Child Zombie Killer and then, just, sort of, lost interest…

That’s not to say that I didn’t write though. I amounted about 24k words of a fanfiction peice and it’s still going!

It’s essentially to help me develop a couple of characters that I have. One whose very much at the forefront of my writing, and another whose been sat on the back-burner for a couple of years – who has been slowly getting back in to the fore-front these last couple days and don’t want to leave me alone. But, their both from completely different settings, and worlds, so, they’ll never actually meet. And, back-burner character has to stay there a little longer because working on another project right now is just out of the question for me.

This month though, I’m not gonna make any attempts at goals or give myself any deadlines.

I’m even considered just deleting instagram off my phone for the month. Cause, the procrastination is real, but, I’d miss seeing everyones posts, so, thats out of the question. Although, I am going to try and limit my use a tad! But like I said, no goals!

I’m also gonna try and work-out a better schedule for these blog posts! I’ve slacked the last week or so, and I shouldn’t have!

So, yeah, not much is happening this month in retrospect. I have more overtime at work next week, although, I do have a nice three-day weekend for May-day and, at the end of the month, I also have a four day weekend which I’m more than looking forward too.

And then, next month, I’m gonna go see Ed Sheeran!!! Yay!

And, also this month, before I forget, the third book in the Spellslinger Series by Sebastien de Castell comes out and I am just, ecstatic about it! Spellslinger and Shadowblack were easily my favourite books of 2017, and I’m just gonna assume that Charmcaster and Soulbinder will be this years!

Anyway, like I said, no specific goals this month!

I’m really hoping that it’ll help to take the strain and the doubt of a little bit and let me continue to enjoy all of this a little bit more than before!

I’d love to know what you guys up to this month? Have you got any goals or deadlines set?

Until then though,

Just Keep Writing,

When The Bad Guy Has A Point

You know, lately, I’ve been experiencing some situations in which the bad guy… have a point… a very valid point… and then, you have normal people, like you and me, fighting against said good point for the love of friends, family: all the things that make us human… and, maybe, it just proves that humanity is going to destroy itself.

And, thats what makes a bad guy so great. A bad guy needs to believe that they are doing the right thing, not because of a troubled past, or a revenge plot or a hunger-for-power or psychopathic tendencies, they need to convince you that they believe in what they do.

Their points must be valid, they must be so intune with their vision, with their belief that they are helping others that you have to stop yourself, just once, to think about it. To think, to ask yourself; are they right?

Your favourite characters may die, your protagonists may lay to waste but, in the end, if the bad guy succeeds, will humanity be better off? Will it save itself instead destroy itself?

Majority over minority?

Minority over majority?

In the end of ends, is it worth it?

If only humanity can destroy itself? Should it really have a place in the world anyway?

Think about that when you develop that bad guy in your story… To suceed, they need a drive just as big as your protagonist, perhaps even greater…

And, maybe, just consider it all anyway…

Until next time though,

Just keep writing,

Week 16/52 Writing Update: Thinking

So, this past week, all I’ve really written is this fanfiction I’ve been working on, which has actually been quite fun to do. I like writing first drafts, especially the fact that I can be so unorganised with it, it’s unreal.

Can’t be arsed with the chapter anymore?

Just start the next one!

That was my favourite thing to do during NaNoWriMo!

It’s a shame editing isn’t the same.

Although, I’ve also slacked on a few things this week too. I’ve been really bad at getting involved with the writing community over on insta, and I think it’s just been a mix of having no motivation and no inspiration to post anything, and then working over-time.

Which, after this week, hopefully, will stop for a little bit!

But, I have been considering going dark for a few days now, where in I just sort of just take a break from insta (and blogging too) just so I can get my s*** together and not feel bad when I don’t make a post date!

I wouldn’t be gone for very long I don’t think, and I wouldn’t be able to give it all up completely! I’d still be dropping by to read up peoples posts and stuff (although I’ll try to limit it), I I just wouldn’t have the pressure of posting myself.

I’m thinking of taking the month of May off as of right now, but whether it would be shorter is still TBD!

I’d still be writing though! Tales needs to get its arse kicked back in to gear and get out to beta’s before they all give up on me 😂

And, I obviously have this little side project as well – which is fun to delve in to! It’s really starting to take shape too, and, is gonna far succeed the 28k words of the last fanfiction I wrote (and actually complete).

I won’t be gone just yet though, so you still get to put up with ny rambles for a little bit longer, although, when I do come back, there are gonna be a couple schedule changes, but, I’ll worry about that later!

Anyway, just a ‘quickish’ check in with you guys today! I’ll see you on Wednesday!

Until then though,

Just Keep Writing,

Humble Beginnings: A FanFiction Throwback

So, back in the day, when ‘Heroes’ was all the rage, I delved in to the wild and wonderful world of fanfiction.

Now, my writing wasn’t up to parr (at all), but, it was some of the first pieces of writing that I did that other people saw other than my parents. And, people actually read them. They actually followed the story from the beginning to the end – even though I look back at them now and cringe – but for me – and for everyone – it was such a motivator to keep going, and, it made me feel that little bit of hope that perhaps my own characters and my own stories could be just as interesting!

I started off writing a fanfiction about the characters from the ABC show Heroes (or was it CW?!?) and how they had some sort of adventure when they were all five and six (which they suspiciously forgot – obvs) and instead of save the cheerleader, it was save the birthday cake….

I started writing it in January of 2008. I would have been 14… Yeah… Save the birthday cake…

Well, after that was done, I did a couple more Heroes fanfics, and then, I even did what I thought season six of LOST would turn out like!

I think though, out of all of those fics I wrote in that first year or so of writing fanfiction, my favourite to write was a crossover between Heroes and Jurassic Park (subsenquently called Jurassic Heroes) and, although I can’t read it through – cause you know, the cringes are real – it had 23 chapters of some of my favourite plot lines ever!

The last time I updated that account was on August 07 2009, and, after losing the password (or the email address, I have no idea), I started another account in 2013!

As the result of a game hangover – which I’m currently suffering right now – I did my longest-running fanfiction ever! From January to November, with 18 chapters between then and there and round about 26k words (which is a lot in some cases, but my pacing has definitely bettered itself since), I wrote on this project until the fuel ran out and then I never even finished it…

I get reminded of it sometimes though. I have a memory stick that pops up every now and then, and I think, oh, I’m gonna see what’s on that, and chapter 18 is there like, hello! Remember me?

And the writing, compared to now anyway, still isn’t the greatest; but, I really tried to take the process that little bit more serious and I was going with the hype at the time – which was fine with me cause I loved it as much as everyone else – so that meant a bigher audience too.

And, it also let me dive in to character types that I hadn’t written about before.

The psychopathically insane kind.

And, that’s what made it all the more appealing to me.

Now, I’m gonna leave links here, but please, don’t read them. It’s just for me for if I ever feel the need one day to have another trip down memory lane and see if I can get further than the first chapter…

You can if you really want to… (But I don’t recommend it)

Jurassic Heroes

Fighting Insanity

Anyway, enough about the past& the whole reason for this little memory trip was because I’m currently writing another fanfiction! And, I haven’t actually decided whether I’m going to be publishing it anywhere or I’m just gonna write it for my own enjoyment!

I’m using the essense of a character I created in one of my own books -Lauryn from Tales of Monsters – and put them in to this completely different situation and, I’m just gonna go with the flow and try and develop them that tad little bit more!

I’m also using another character, from the fandom, to help me develop that character type writing process sort-of-thing because, in another series, which I planned and wrote a couple drafts of; a good, good while ago now, there’s this character that sort of needs the mindset that this character already has.

So, yeah. Whether that made sense. I don’t even know anymore…

Anyway, my other two projects are, sort of, on hold, for the moment. I just seem to have a lot of other things racing through my mind all the time, and I need to get it all done before I can finally sit down and work on it properly…

I have deadlines coming up soon too… And they all seem to feature around April 30th/May 1st so thats fun…

Any how, I need to go and do said things and stop thinking about doing said things, so,

Until next time,

Just Keep Writing,

Week 15/52 Writing Update: Fanfiction!

So, yeah, this week, the only writing I’ve done is fanfiction writing. Which, I guess, is better than nothing, right?

I saw once, that, not many people admit to writing fanfics. But then, the only fanfics you seem to here about is ones including real life people like Liam and Harry from One Direction being secretly in love with each other.

Obviously, there’s a lot more to it than that. There are fanfics for almost every single book, movie, tv show, comic and video-game ever created. Whether it’s a one-shot or multiple chapters.

And, for a lot of writers, those peices were some of the first things they ever got real feedback on from readers. Whether they were absolutely terrible, or absolutely brilliant. There are people willing to read it because they loved the book/movie/tvshow/comic/game just as much as you did.

And, I think that’s pretty awesome…

I also think it gives you a platform to develop your skills as a writer without having to put that much research in to it all. It also gives you a chance to better your character development skills too!

I’ve only properly written about 4000 words of an actual storyline, but its words I might not have wrote at all if I hadn’t started it!

I think it’s also just gonna be a fun little side project that I can enjoy when Diaries and Tales get a little bit too much for me!

Have any of you guys delved in to writing(or reading) fanfiction before?

I wrote quite a lot of it back in the day, and, I’m hoping to do a throwback on Wednesday on some of my favourite (and awful) fanfiction stories from back then!

Until then though guys,

Just Keep Writing,

Three Quotes, Three Days, One Challenge: Day Three

So, it’s the last day of the 3D,3Q challenge that I was nominated by Robin-LeeAnn to take part in, and, considering some of the events that happened over this last weekend, and a game I’m still currently hung over from. The following quote sort of stuck with me.

Whether you’ve played Far Cry 5 or not, this quote from the main antagonist really stuck with me.

When are we going to learn that we can’t fight fire with fire? That bullets and missiles won’t solve any thing? Weapons were made to destroy; not to create.

A bit depressing, but still!

The rules for this challenge are as follows:

  • Thank the person that nominated you!
  • Post a quote for three consecutive days (a quote a day)
  • Nominate three others to take part!

I nominate:

Anyone who wants to take part! This is an awesome challenge and I would love to see what each and every one of you came up with! If you do, please make sure to tag me so I can see them!

Until then though,

Just Keep Writing,

I don’t know what it is with this quote, but it always makes me a feel a little bit better whenever I read it!

The Rules

  • Post a quote for three consecutive days (a quote a day)
  • Nominate three others to take part!

For today, I’m going to nominate:

Julia Witmer

Cambria Covell

Caith Esra Ulvar

I don’t have any work or distractions tomorrow, so day 3 of the challenge should be posted on time!

Until then though,
